WE ARE SMHR

In 2015, SMHR recognized a critical need to support horses in distress and began the application process for its 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization status, which was officially granted in early 2016. Since then, we have continued to grow; rescuing, rehabilitating, retraining, and rehoming horses from owner surrenders, sheriff seizures, abandonment cases, and those at risk of slaughter. Committed to progress, SMHR has enhanced its training programs, focusing on education to ensure each horse is well-prepared for a successful future.

Owners Jessica & Holly Shepherd have been rescuing horses since before 2016, when they officially established SMHR. They are joined by several team members who play huge roles in the day-to-day operations of the rescue. The success stories of each horse who have trotted through would not be possible without the support of volunteers, online followers, donators, and on-site staff members!

"I'm Jessica Shepherd, and horses have been woven into the fabric of my life since I was a child. The gentle rhythm of their hooves, the soft nuzzle of their velvety noses, the quiet strength in their eyes—horses have always held a special place in my heart. That's why, in 2015, I founded Shepherd Mountain Horse Rescue, a sanctuary where neglected and abandoned equines can find refuge, healing, and a second chance at life. My journey with horses has been a lifelong adventure. From riding and showing to competing and training, I've immersed myself in their world, gaining invaluable experience and a deep understanding of their unique needs. But my true passion lies in sharing the magic of horses with others, educating the public about their beauty, intelligence, and gentle spirits. At Shepherd Mountain, we don't just provide shelter and sustenance; we offer a holistic approach to healing, both physical and emotional. Each horse receives individualized care, tailored to their specific needs. We work tirelessly to rehabilitate them, providing veterinary care, nutritional support, and gentle training to prepare them for their forever homes. Witnessing their transformation, from timid and broken to confident and thriving, is the greatest reward. When I'm not at the rescue, you'll still find me surrounded by the beauty of nature, enjoying quality time with my loved ones, our dogs, and, of course, my beloved horses. Whether it's a peaceful trail ride or simply sharing a quiet moment in their presence, horses continue to fill my life with joy and purpose. Shepherd Mountain Horse Rescue is more than just a place; it's a testament to the enduring bond between humans and horses and my unwavering commitment to their well-being.”

Hi, I’m Holly Shepherd!

Co-Owner / Founder

“I’m really dedicated to my volunteer work at SMHR—it’s a place where I can make a real difference and grow as a person. It’s taught me a lot about responsibility, teamwork, and understanding others. Outside of that, my world pretty much revolves around horses. Being part of the equestrian drill team isn’t just a hobby—it’s a big part of who I am. Horses are my passion, and I’m always learning more about them, whether it’s riding, caring for them, or just spending time around everything horse-related. Balancing volunteering and my love for horses keeps me grounded and motivated. It’s a journey that’s helping me build skills and confidence, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.”
